Most of his band and crew were stricken with a stomach ailment forcing the country artist to play an acoustic bare-bones show in Salt Lake City.

Eric Church, the 37-year old Grammy nominated country artist known for hits such as “Guys Like Me,” “Love Your Love the Most,” and “Give Me Back My Hometown,” faced a difficult decision as sickness took out most of his band and stage crew. Rather than cancel, Church opted to play an accoustic performance by himself on a stage made for eight, without the typical lighting and technology normally scene on his stage show.

The show featured Church with his guitar on stage with a microphone.

He played acoustic versions of fan favorites, including current hits and early material. His set list included “Give Me Back My Hometown,” “Drink In My Hand,” “Cold One,” “Talladega,” “These Boots,” “How ‘Bout You,” and “Livin’ Part of Life” among others.

According to Church’s website, he told the crowd, “If you’ve seen our show so far on this tour, you’re probably wondering what the hell is going on right now. Well, so I am. Here’s the deal, yesterday we had the stomach flu strike our band, our crew, everyone. We had no one to hang video, lights, nothing.”

He played the mostly solo acoustic set to pleasure of his fans, whom counted themselves fortunate to see such a special performance. Social media echoed this sentiment with posts stating “It was an AMAZING show! It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen,” and “He was raw, real, and it was just a unique experience.”

In order to make up for the scaled down show, Church promised to return to Salt Lake City on Memorial Day. This visit will be a free concert with a full band for all ticket holders of this unplanned solo show. While many artists would have cancelled a show with such a calamity on their hands, Eric Church demonstrated his dedication to his fans and courage to carry the show on his own. As user LYNNYORK posted on his site, “… this is why Eric is the MAN!!”

Church is currently on the road with The Outsiders Tour in support of the just released album of the same name. His tour runs into summer 2015 and includes dates across the US and Canada.
